Jake Gyllenhaal Could Replace Ben Affleck As Batman

Rumors have long-circulated about Ben Affleck‘s imminent departure from the DC Universe (and he’s reportedly been looking for a “cool” way out), and it looks like they may actually be coming true. After a rocky press tour and middling-to-negative Justice League reviews, it looks like Affleck might be replaced by Jake Gyllenhaal in Matt Reeves‘ (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) new Batman trilogy (and potentially the future Justice League films).

According to We Got This Covered, Reeves has had his eye on Gyllenhaal for a while and the actor has been shortlisted for headlining The Batman. Gyllenhaal, who previously has been in the running for playing the Caped Crusader (and Spider-Man!), most recently starred in Stronger, a film about a Boston bombing survivor that gained him critical acclaim. He was also previously nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2006 for Brokeback Mountain. While Gyllenhaal is certainly a capable actor, it’s hard not to see his casting as more of the same.

The Batman is scheduled to begin production in Summer 2018 with a tentative 2019 release date. No one in Reeves’ or Gyllenhaal’s camps have confirmed these rumors, but it’s likely we’ll know soon who will be the latest Bruce Wayne in a long line of broody white dudes.

I’m here for it… as Jake can act and Ben… can’t! And it’d actually get me to watch the series! Reboot it, again!
